FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do You do free estimates
Custom Painting, Inc.’s estimates are always free. Once you call requesting an estimate, we will arrange a time to meet that works best for you, whether it’s in the evening or on a weekend. It is best if you are present so we can discuss the particulars of the job and address any issues we may find while inspecting the property. We can also discuss colors, sheen, scheduling, etc.
will i receive a written estimate?
Once we have met, discussed the details of the job, and we have taken all the information we need, we will write up an estimate for you. These days, most prospective clients prefer to receive the estimate via email. Custom Painting, Inc. will email the estimate to you as a PDF attachment. Once you have reviewed it, if there are any questions please give us a call and we will be happy to arrange a time to meet and address your questions.
do you repair rotten or damaged wood/drywall
In most cases Custom Painting, Inc. can do the repairs. However, if it requires extensive work or replacement, we may need to call in another professional. We have worked with several carpenters and drywall professionals over the years and have a list of people we work closely with and could recommend.
Do you remove and hang wallpaper?
Custom Painting, Inc. can remove wallpaper, but in most cases we use a local company called The Paper Puller. Dominic and Tony are excellent at this and it is all they do. We do not hang wallpaper, but know several well qualified people we can recommend. If you need more information about this, please call us at (402) 430-6441.
do you spray or use a brush and roller?
Each job is different. Almost all interior painting work is done by hand using a brush and roller. If it is possible, we will spray and back brush exterior siding. All trim on the exterior is done by hand.
what type of paint do you recommend?
There are many brands of paint on the market, each with various lines of paint that can range from inexpensive to very expensive. Custom Painting, Inc. only uses high-quality paints from respected companies like Sherwin-Williams, PPG, Behr, and Benjamin Moore. We can help determine which line of paint would be best for your particular needs when we meet to do an estimate. For more information, please give us a call or use the link to request more information. You can also click the links at the top of the page to view information about the paint companies we use.
are you licensed/insured?
Custom Painting, Inc. is fully licensed in the state of Nebraska and is fully insured.
what do we need to do before you start? do we need to get the paint?
Once you have agreed to the estimate and we have a signed agreement, we will do the rest. On interiors, we will move furniture, remove pictures and outlet covers, and drape all furniture with plastic/drops. If pictures will go back up in the same spot, we will identify those and remove and replace hangers as we paint. All other holes will be filled and sanded. Custom Painting, Inc. will order and pick up the paint for each job.
can we see what the paint will look like?
At Custom Painting, Inc. we encourage clients to test colors using sample quarts. Once you have a color picked out, or are trying to decide between a couple of colors, Custom Painting, Inc. can apply those colors to several areas for you to evaluate. It is important to put test samples up in several areas because light can have a dramatic effect on the final color.
WHATS THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN A WALL?
For interior surfaces, use a soft cloth/towel and a small amount of mild soap (dish soap) and warm water. DO NOT scrub the wall, but instead gently wipe the area until clean, then wipe with clean damp cloth and blot the area dry.
For exterior surfaces, rinse off the surfaces with a garden hose and spray nozzle. If you need to use a pressure washer, make sure you use a tip that will fan out the stream of water and stay back from surface. Pressure washers are powerful and can cut into the surface causing severe damage. A mild house cleaner can be applied via garden sprayer if needed and rinsed off with a garden hose.
CAN YOU TOUCH UP MY WALLS, I DON’T WANT TO REPAINT EVERYTHING?
We hear this a lot and it is not a simple question nor answer. Over time, interior paint can become scratched or chipped, discolored, and lose some its sheen. Sunlight and other factors can change the color of interior paint slightly. It is hard to notice until you try to touch it up. Most of the time, when you try to touch up spots the new paint will appear darker, more vivid, and glossier than the old paint, even if it is from the same can. We can attempt to reduce this effect by diluting the paint 5-10% with water and applying small amounts at a time. However, this can be a risky task and results cannot be guaranteed. More often than not it would be advisable to paint the entire wall from corner to corner. It is far less noticeable in corners or the edge of walls.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO USE PRIMER IF THE PAINT IS A PAINT AND PRIMER IN ONE?
We get asked this a lot! I think a lot of the marketing has been misleading. While some new products are a paint and primer in one they are not designed for every situation. Primers have several purposes, from increasing adhesion of the paint to blocking stains and old colors. The primer mixed with the paint really only helps with blocking old colors and allowing a faster transition to a new color. It does very little, in my opinion, to increase adhesion or block stains. Primers should also be used on new drywall to seal it and provide a good base for paint and all in one paints do not do the best job of that. I highly recommend using the appropriate primer when it is needed and applying two coats of paint over the primer.
